“I think the idea of peace, both internal and even societal, really comes down to engendering this sense of peace, and harmony, and flow within yourself.” - Sat Bir Singh Khalsa

Today, September 21st, is both the International Day of Peace and World Gratitude Day. As I reflect on the state of my country and the state of the world at present I think that it is becoming more and more important for us, as individuals and as a collective, to engage in contemplative practices (such as yoga) so that we may understand our interconnectedness and experience a deeper state of unity.

As we practise we build our awareness of self and we begin to express more positive emotions. As we center in peace, it begins to ripple outwards through our actions, and the energy we bring into our spaces. I believe that through cultivating peace and gratitude with discipline, sincerity and devotion we can create meaningful change.

  • We can begin with our breath. Let us build our awareness of the length of our breath, of the ease of exhaling and inhaling. Inhale peace, exhale gratitude. Inhale gratitude, exhale peace.
  • We can work on our focus. What are we giving our attention to? How does this serve us? What is our experience when we focus on building, on creating and caring for ourselves and others?
  • We can look at how we manage ourselves - our thoughts, our emotions, our bodies, our space. What do we value? What is this based on? How do we grow?

What are your thoughts on peace and gratitude? How do you practise?

peace,

Renee Arundhati
