30 Days of Gratitude 2023 - Fun

“Fun” is the prompt for day 26 of #Gratitude30. “Am I fun?” I ask my husband. “Do I have fun?” “What is fun even?”
I am fun, I have fun and fun is amusement, enjoyment, light-hearted pleasure. Fun is merry-making, says the dictionaries. Any fun I have as an adult I owe to the foundation set by my parents, two of the most joyful people I know even during times of trial.
These times we live in require us to make space for fun once it is safe for us to do so. Having fun will help us to live healthier lives and it is important for us to take care of ourselves in this way.
Catherine Price, author of The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again, defines fun as a time when you are able to embody a mix of three things: playfulness, connection and flow. “Fun is a feeling, not an activity”, she says.
She shares that playfulness comes when we embrace a sense of light-heartedness and freedom in what we choose to do. Connection is felt when we are present in our activities - we feel connected to the activity and to those sharing experiences with us. Flow is that state we get into when we are intensely focused and creatively engaged. All three elements are needed for fun.
