In 2018 I hosted my first women's retreat as a response to an inner call to create more space for persons to connect and discover more of themselves through yoga.
Since that time, I have been hosting and co-hosting yoga retreats. They have varied in length from full weekends, to one-day events, to afternoon retreats.
I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to attend yoga retreats both in Trinidad and abroad from an early age. Retreat experiences allow us to:
have space from our everyday routine
connect with and care for self
meet like-minded people
deepen our practice
'Transition: Navigating Change with Grace' was a weekend retreat held at the Asa Wright Nature Centre and Lodge on the weekend of the partial lunar eclipse in October 2023. This weekend allowed the group time away from everyday life to contemplate the energy of transitions, to observe how to navigate change and to share and discuss the movement of grace in our lives.
This retreat involved less physical practice (participants had the opportunity to go on nature walks and visit the pools), and more prānāyāma, meditation and conversation. We were very supported over this weekend experience by the staff at the Lodge.
'Walk in Love' was an afternoon retreat held at the Pointe-à-Pierre Wildfowl Trust the weekend before Valentine's Day 2023. This event was an invitation for us to reflect on the love we have for self and for nature and to observe how being in nature supports self-love. We were guided through a walking tour of the Trust and then found a space where we were able to sit for prānāyāma, meditation and conversation. Our afternoon snack was catered by Grain Cafe.
'Joy: an expression of Spirit' was a one day retreat held on the solstice in December 2022 at Mahogany Ridge. Our group came together during the day to release, and prepare for the light coming into our space as the season changed, and to reflect on our connection to joy. Our workshop included tools to recognize one's inner joy, to observe how we express this joy and to share our light. Through prānāyāma, meditation and journaling we explored this theme and then shared a festive lunch catered by Chef Simone Edwin of Meraki Catering.
'Kindle' was a weekend retreat held at Hacienda Jacana on the weekend before June's full moon in 2022. Through our yoga practice we explored how to connect and nourish our own inner light as we reflected on the outer sources of light in our space. This weekend was intended to prepare us for the upcoming solstice and the International Day of Yoga.
It was a very rainy weekend but the beauty of the space and the willingness of participants to open and experience the weekend resulted in a beautiful retreat. This retreat's art project was a personal gratitude box that could be placed on one's home altar. Feedback received months after indicates they are still in use!
An afternoon retreat was held at Esperanza Alta in 2020. This was an opportunity for us to be in nature for a time. Held during the pandemic - a time of change and upheaval - it offered an opportunity to discover how our yoga practice and our community could be used to ground and support us during such times. We were treated to a guided tour of the space and taught how we can help to sustain our pollinators and their ecosystem. There was meditation, journaling and āsana practice. Our retreat ended with a light dinner and a bonfire.
'Embrace Peace' was also held at the Anise Resort & Spa. This retreat was built around the International Day of Peace and was held from September 20th to 22nd, 2019. Activities included morning qi gong, midday meditation, and evening yoga nidra. Workshops were focused on exploring what peace meant to us, and discovering how we could create and share peace in our lives. Our art workshop included the making of origami cranes as part of the Peace Crane Project.
'Sacred Space' was held at the Anise Resort & Spa in San Souci on the weekend of October 12th to 14th, 2018. It offered an opportunity for women to honour and connect with their inner space whilst having a nourishing time in a supportive physical space. Activities and workshops included yoga on the beach, exploring our inner space through journaling and contemplation, an art activity for holding and keeping the things in our space. Yoga nidra and meditation was also offered as part of this retreat.
In 2022, as Trinidad and Tobago continued to open up following the pandemic, I was invited to co-host retreats with Rheanna. Most were held at Ajoupa Gardens, one was held at Wa Samaki Ecosystems.
These retreats were created with the intent of supporting people's emergence from lockdown; providing guidance through community, nature, yoga, mindfulness and nourishment.
Retreats were built around the cycles of the moon with a different focus around the new and full moon, and different themes throughout the year as we observed the seasons of our growth.
