Who can attend?
All are welcome once able to maintain the silence of the space during our designated quiet hour of uninterrupted reading.
What is the cost of this event?
There is no cost to attend The Quiet Chapter however we encourage persons to patronise The Arts Café as they are sharing their space with us. A warm beverage, snack or light meal can pair well with our reading. If you'd like to make a donation towards management of The Quiet Chapter or would like to volunteer to assist with setup please speak with Renee (744-8161).
What can I read?
There is no assigned reading at this club. Bring whatever you are currently reading or would like to read: a book, an e-book, audiobook (please walk with your headphones), comic book, or textbook.
Do I have to read for the hour?
You are welcome to pause in your reading, stare off into space, process what you've read or rest your eyes. Please avoid interrupting anyone else during the quiet hour.
Do I have to stay after the hour of reading?
You are welcome to but do not have to. There will be optional sharing of what we've read, or what may have come up for us during our reading. You are also welcome to stay and listen.
Wondering what to read? Here are some suggestions:
If you're unsure what you want to read, consider choosing a book based on a loose personal prompt such as:
something in a period you're interested in,
something you always meant to finish,
an embarrassing comfort book, or
a book someone gifted you
Please join me for The Quiet Chapter, a reading club where all is welcome.
Our reading club is based on the silent book club model and allows for people to spend time together while reading their choice of material. I particularly like that everyone can read whatever they like and we are not following a specific book. It allows for more people to share the space and, for me, the community building is an important part of this club.
When I first saw posts about silent book clubs and other reading events happening worldwide I thought it would be such a wonderful event to attend. After looking around my area and not finding such a space I decided to begin this one myself.
I shared the idea with The Arts Cafe and asked about using the space. I shared on my social media that I was thinking about something and asked for help with the name. And here we are. Consider this your invitation to come and read with us!
