Frequently asked questions

All are welcome once able to maintain the silence of the space during our designated quiet hour of uninterrupted reading.

There is no cost to attend The Quiet Chapter when it is hosted at The Arts Café but we encourage persons to patronise the café as they are sharing their space with us. A warm beverage, snack or light meal can pair well with our reading.

There may be months when we are not at The Arts Café such as December's meetup at The Shadytree Cottage in Retrench. A cover charge is then applied to manage the rent of the space and any food/drinks provided.

If you'd like to make a donation towards management of The Quiet Chapter or would like to volunteer to assist with setup please speak with Renee (744-8161).

There is no assigned reading at this club. Bring whatever you are currently reading or would like to read: a book, an e-book, audiobook (please walk with your headphones), comic book, or textbook.

You are welcome to pause in your reading, stare off into space, process what you've read or rest your eyes. Please avoid interrupting anyone else during the quiet hour.

You are welcome to but do not have to. There will be optional sharing of what we've read, or what may have come up for us during our reading. You are also welcome to stay and listen.

If you're unsure what you want to read, consider choosing a book based on a loose personal prompt such as:

  • something in a period you're interested in,

  • something you always meant to finish,

  • an embarrassing comfort book,

  • a book someone gifted you, or

  • one from those that others have read

Please join me for The Quiet Chapter, a reading club where all is welcome.

Our reading club is based on the silent book club model and allows for people to spend time together while reading their choice of material. I particularly like that everyone can read whatever they wish to and that we are not following a specific book. This allows for more people to share the space and, for me, the community building is an important part of this club.

When I first saw posts about silent book clubs, and other reading events happening worldwide, I thought how wonderful such events would be to attend. After looking around my area and not finding such a space I then decided to begin this one.

I shared the idea of a reading club with The Arts Cafe and asked about the use of their space. Then I shared on my social media that there was an idea I was working on, and I asked for help with the name. And here we are…. The Quiet Chapter.

Consider this your invitation to come read with us!
